“Great Expectation, a Novel” by Vinson Cunningham
Leader: Jennifer Cassettari
This rich story weaves its way through the experiences of two young black men — “the Senator” (never mentioned by name) who has announced his run for the Presidency and David, the 20-something who signs on as a campaign aide.
Set in 2008 the book both taps into our memories of that seminal year and provides a powerful preamble to the America we inhabit 16 years later. Hovering above the swirl of politics, money, religion, race, inequality, gamesmanship, rhetoric, and hope is the question “Have our “Great Expectations” been met?” It’s hard to answer Yes. But then the question becomes “Why not?” Are we even more at sea now than we were then?
(The cover art, Winslow Homer’s powerful painting “The Gulf Stream”, was not a random choice.)
I’m looking forward to your comments and insights! Hope to see you there!
